Hi friends!
There’s just something about summer in Oak Park that makes you want to slow down, grab a drink, and enjoy the sunshine—and what better way to do that than on a great patio? Whether you're catching up with friends over tacos and margaritas, sipping wine under twinkle lights, or simply enjoying a quiet morning coffee, Oak Park is full of incredible spots to soak up the season. As a local who’s always on the lookout for cozy corners and good vibes, I’ve rounded up some of my absolute favorite patios that all happen to be a quick walk from the L. Let’s dive in—you might just find your new go-to summer hangout!
Kicking things off with my go-to patio pick in the Oak Park area: Maya Del Sol! If summer doesn’t include at least a few nights under the twinkle lights at Maya, are you even doing summer right? This Latin American gem is my go-to when I’m in the mood for a killer margarita, some fresh ceviche, and vibes that are simply unmatched. Their patio is the ultimate hangout spot—lush, lively, and basically made for catching up with friends over cocktails.
Next up is my family’s go-to patio spot: Poor Phil’s Bar and Grill. Okay, we might be a little biased because my daughter Ruby has worked there for the past four summers! But even if she hadn’t, we’d still be regulars. This laid-back sports bar is an Oak Park classic (it's been around since 1985!) and it just nails the easygoing summer vibe. If you or someone you love is a beer lover, their selection is seriously impressive, and the cocktails don’t disappoint either. Pro tip: hit up their weekday happy hour from 4pm-6pm, it’s one of the best in town.
If live music is your thing, you have to check out FitzGerald’s. Not only is this a local favorite but it is world famous! Come for the BBQ and stay for the music. Their patio has an easy, backyard-party feel that’s perfect for grabbing a drink, catching up with friends, or dancing to a band you didn’t know you loved until that night. It’s super family-friendly too, so bring the whole crew and make a night of it.
If you’re in the mood for something a little more elevated—whether it’s a romantic date night or a sunny Sunday brunch—Citrine is the place to be. This Mediterranean spot might be one of the newer additions to Oak Park, but it’s already earned its spot on just about every local’s favorites list. The food is fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care—every dish feels a little special. The patio is just the right mix of cozy and chic, making it the perfect setting for everything from catching up with friends over one of their craft cocktails to sharing a candlelit dinner. Personally, it’s my go-to when I want to treat myself and someone I love.
If you’re in the mood to kick back on a rooftop with a cold drink in hand, you’ll want to check out Avenue Ale House. They’ve totally nailed that perfect summer bar energy. It's casual, fun, and just the right amount of lively. While the rooftop isn’t open quite yet for the season, trust me, it’s worth the wait. Once it is, it quickly becomes one of the best spots in the area to hang out on a warm summer day. Whether you’re meeting up with friends, grabbing dinner with family, or just looking for a place to unwind after work, the rooftop at Avenue Ale House is always a solid choice for good vibes and even better views.
If you’re craving a quick escape to Italy, there’s no need to book a flight, just head over to Il Vicolo. The moment you step onto the patio, it feels like you’ve stumbled upon a lively little restaurant tucked away in the heart of Tuscany. You might even forget you’re still in Oak Park. If you’re in the mood for great pasta, good wine, and that cozy, romantic Italian atmosphere, Il Vicolo will absolutely hit the spot. And hey, it’s definitely easier (and cheaper) than hopping on a plane.
This one’s for all my sommeliers and wine lovers—Anfora is a must-visit. If you’re looking for a unique experience in Oak Park, this wine bar that’s more than just a place to sip. This spot offers a truly unique and thoughtful experience. Their sidewalk patio is the perfect place to unwind with a glass (or hey, maybe even a bottle...no judgment here!) while soaking up the charming Oak Park atmosphere. Whether you're a seasoned wine enthusiast or just starting to explore, you'll leave feeling a little more inspired—and probably already planning your next visit.
Got a visitor coming into town and don’t feel like making the trek into the city for Chicago-style pizza? No problem! Just take them to Lou Malnati’s right here in Oak Park. It’s a classic for a reason. During the warmer months, their front room transforms into a breezy indoor/outdoor patio space that’s ideal for soaking up some sun while diving into a deep dish. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, making it a great spot for everything from casual lunches to family dinners. Lou’s brings all the iconic Chicago flavor without the downtown hassle—and honestly, everyone leaves happy (and full).
Looking for a cute new coffee spot? My husband, John, and I love walking over to Whirlwind Coffee and relaxing on their patio—it honestly feels like our own little backyard. This cozy coffee shop has become one of our absolute favorites. Not only is their coffee consistently top-notch, but they’re also doing amazing things behind the scenes. Whirlwind donates 100% of their net profits to charities and communities in need, which makes every cup feel even better. So whenever I’m in need of a little pick-me-up, Whirlwind is always my first stop.
And finally, my ultimate favorite summer patio? My own backyard! One of the things I love most about Oak Park is how it’s filled with amazing outdoor spaces that make the most of the season. Whether it’s a casual family dinner on our back deck or a spontaneous grill-out at a friend’s place, there’s always a cozy patio or backyard hang waiting to happen. It’s the kind of town where summer feels like one long block party—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
From margaritas at Maya to backyard hangs with friends, Oak Park truly shines in the summertime. There’s a patio here for every mood and moment—whether you're planning a romantic date night, a casual family dinner, or just need a quiet coffee break. I love celebrating all the little things that make this community feel like home. So get out there, explore a new spot (or revisit an old favorite), and enjoy every last drop of sunshine. See you on the patio!
